Atletico Madrid could part ways with Manchester United target Saul Niguez this summer
According to Spanish publication El Larguero (h/t The Daily Mail), Atletico Madrid may be willing to let go of Manchester United target Saul Niguez in the summer.
Diego Simeone’s side are on top of La Liga but are willing to sell up to six players this summer. Niguez is one of the high-profile players who could be headed to the exit door.
The Red Devils’ interest in the player is not new. The player too was pleased with the rumours and admitted it was an honour to be associated with United.
One major drawback is the player’s massive release clause of £130m. With five years left on his current deal, Atletico also hold the aces when it comes to negotiations.
It was reported earlier this year that the Red Devils have earmarked £43million for the 26-year-old. It falls some way off the player’s release clause.
A missed opportunity!
Former United manager David Moyes had sent scouts to watch Niguez during his stint at the club in 2014.
With Ryan Giggs close to retirement then and Darren Fletcher battling illness, Moyes was intent on bringing in a new central midfielder. The Scotsman also sent his assistant Phil Neville to scout Niguez while he was on loan at Rayo Vallecano.
Moyes was however sacked soon after and his successor Louis van Gaal’s arrival saw our interest in the player cool down.

With Paul Pogba’s future unclear and Nemanja Matic not getting any younger, the midfield is an area that may need reinforcing. In Niguez, United could very well land a proven player in his prime.
