Man United midfield star suffers racial abuse after FA Cup loss to Leicester

Solskajer expects nothing but the best from his players

Manchester United star Fred racially abused after FA Cup loss to Leicester

According to The Guardian, Manchester United star Fred was subject to racial abuse on social media following his side’s 3-1 loss to Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The Brazilian was responsible for the Foxes’ opener after he was left in a vulnerable position by Harry Maguire’s poor pass. He was quickly closed down by three Leicester players and lost the ball to Kelechi Iheanacho, who slotted past Dean Henderson.

Although Mason Greenwood drew us level before the break, it was as good as it got for United. Youri Tielemans put the Foxes ahead before Iheanacho put the result beyond doubt.

After the match, the 28-year-old’s Instagram account became a maze hive of abuses with a number of them being racial in nature. While the Brazilian did not have the best of games, some ‘so-called’ fans have taken it too far with their unwarranted jabs.

Fred is not the first United star to face the issue this season. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Axel Tuanzebe have all been subjected to the same vile behaviour.

The women’s team has not been spared either, with Lauren James being a victim of a similar attack.

No room for racism!

United had previously condemned the nature of such attacks. Whether the club will react this time remains to be seen.

Fans can call out players when they have a bad game. It is a part of the sport and is unlikely to change. However, attacking a person on the basis of colour, caste or religion is a larger problem in society.

The frequency of such attacks has increased in recent months and it needs to be looked at.

Rashford too was subjected to the same back in January

While it is good for players to take a knee before games, it is just a gesture at the end of the day. Unless it is backed by tangible measures to improve the reality off the pitch, there will be little change that can be seen.
