Zlatan Ibrahimovic admits the current Manchester United squad is better than that under Jose Mourinho

Former Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic is not one to shy away from controversy. The Swede is not afraid to speak his mind and has a history of doing just that.

Despite turning 39, he is still going strong and is the top scorer of a Milan side looking to regain their relevance in Italian and European football. The latter, however, fell flat on Thursday as they faced off against United in the Europa League.

The Italians went into the game ahead on away goals. An uninspired first half by United put them just 45 minutes away from progressing to the last eight. A Paul Pogba winner in the second half, however, turned the tide in United’s favour – one they would not relinquish.

According to the Mirror, speaking after the game, Zlatan appeared to take a sly dig at the club’s barren run of trophies. We have now gone almost four years without silverware.

The Swede is well aware of it, having been part of Jose Mourinho’s side that won the 2017 Europa League. While he admits that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is better, they are yet to back it up with silverware.

“I think it was better than mine, but I won trophies, that’s the big difference.”

Much promise but nothing to show for it…yet!

Despite the comment, Zlatan continues to have a good relationship with United. Unlike Zlatan, Solskjaer however, does not consider trophies to be the barometer of success.

“I think it’s better, it looks better, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t win nothing.”

Solskjaer’s side has shown a lot of promise. Zlatan is, however, right in saying that progress matters for little unless it leads to trophies. After all, Mourinho’s side has a place in the history books while the jury is still out on Solskjaer.
