Manchester United legend Roy Keane keen to return to management with Celtic

According to The Sun, Manchester United legend, Roy Keane is plotting a return to management with Celtic.

The 49-year-old spent a brief spell at Celtic Park after leaving United in 2005. He made just 10 appearances for the Scottish giants managing one goal and assist each. (h/t Transfermarkt)

It was the Republic of Ireland star’s final foray as a player before hanging up his boots in 2006. He wasted no time getting into management and took over as Sunderland manager the same year.

Keane spent three years at the Stadium of Light before moving onto Ipswich City in 2009. He spent two years at the club and has not held a top managerial position since.

While Keane declined the chance to manage Celtic in 2006, he might not do so if an opportunity comes knocking again. The Scottish giants are keen for a restructure as they look to compete with arch-rivals Rangers.

Led by Steven Gerrard, Rangers are once again the premier side in Scotland and Celtic will need to act first to respond in kind. The Hoops are keen to bring in a figurehead and we can think of few as intimidating as Keane.

Keane will, however, have to compete with Eddie Howe, David Moyes and Scotland boss Steve Clarke for the Celtic Park hot seat. He is close to Martin O’Neill, who still holds some sway over the Celtic hierarchy.

Despite an unflattering managerial record, Keane’s judgment and personality would be a major plus for Celtic following a season that is best forgotten.

Keane is a feisty character in the best of times and will surely demand no less from his players. Whether he will be given the chance to implement his style at Celtic remains to be seen.
