Manchester United set to be questioned over their role in the breakaway European Superleague

According to The Sun, Manchester United are set to be grilled over their role in the proposed European Super League.

This comes after news of elite clubs across the continent seeking to take part in a breakaway super league. This new division would undermine both the Champions League and the Europa League.

The plans have come under intense criticism with FIFA, going as far as to threaten any player who takes part in the competition with a World Cup ban.

The club along with arch-rivals Liverpool will be questioned over their involvement in the incident during the Premier League shareholders meeting this week.

It comes after La Liga president Javier Tebas recently accused both clubs for colluding with FIFA chief Gianni Infantino and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

“This whole underground project started with Infantino and Perez — but the Glazers and Liverpool were active too and held meetings.”

With Joel Glazer absent, Ed Woodard looks set to be the man in the firing line. Apart from the duo, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Chelsea are all believed to be in contention for the competition.

An uneasy overhaul

The league would be made up of 15 or 16 teams from across Europe. American banking giant JP Morgan is allegedly willing to fund the lucrative tournament. (h/t The Mirror)

Fans too have since come out in opposition to the plan. At this point of time, United would be playing a dangerous game if they continue to push ahead with the controversial plan. The club thankfully backed away following the vicious backlash from governing bodies.

While a super League does sound appealing on paper, it will completely overturn the traditional footballing structure in the continent. The ones involved will definitely benefit financially, further increasing the gulf between them and the other teams outside it.

Moreover, the novelty of watching top teams face off every week would wear out soon. What makes a Real Marid vs Manchester United matchup special is how rarely we get to see it. Getting to see it on a regular basis would surely kill the charm.

After all how much hype would the Ashes series generate if it was played once every month?
