English clubs including Manchester United handed £20 million-plus fine for Super League debacle
According to The Athletic, Manchester United and the other English clubs involved in the European Super League will have to fork out over £20million in fines.
The 12-team Super League was announced last April amidst widespread criticism. While all six English clubs eventually pulled out, the damage had already been done.
Each club is liable to pay around £3.5m in fines. While this can be termed a shot in the arm, they could face harsher terms if they revive their participation in the competition.
According to the report, the clubs have also been told that they will be hit with £20million fines each and a 30-point deduction should they agree to join a breakaway Super League in the future.
All six teams have already agreed to pay a settlement with the Premier League. It is expected to be announced later today, ahead of the top-flight’s annual meeting.
The money will not however be distributed to the remaining 14 Premier League teams. It will instead go towards the development of grassroots football.
As things stand, the fine will not be paid from United’s coffers. The Glazers have already announced that they would foot the bill. In fact, only Tottenham Hotspur have said otherwise.
Each club signed a binding legal agreement that committed them to the Super League for at least three years. They will now also have to pay a withdrawal fee for their early exit.
