Jesse Lingard urged to leave Manchester United by Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov
According to the Mirror, Manchester United midfielder, Jesse Lingard has been urged to push for an exit this month by former Red Devils Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov.
A product of the Manchester United youth academy, Lingard been an important squad player under Jose Mourinho and in the early periods of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure.
However, over the past eighteen months, the 28-year-old has endured a swift fall from grace. He now finds himself on the periphery of the Red Devils’ first-team.
So far this term, Lingard has made just three appearances in all competitions. His start against Watford on Saturday was his first in over three months. Given how sparingly he has been used, ex-Red Devil, Berbatov, is of the opinion that the Englishman would be better off leaving.
“Honestly, his time is up. It shows that, for the moment, Ole does not trust him enough to play him. And honestly, he doesn’t have anywhere to play in the team right now. So I think he needs to move, he needs to go somewhere else to play.”
Berbatov’s opinion was echoed by former teammate Michael Owen. The ex-United striker claimed that Lingard must decide whether he wants to remain a bit-part player at Old Trafford or play regularly elsewhere.
“If it was me, and I’d had all that time at Manchester United, I’d probably go and try to play a bit more regularly.”
