Manchester United considering Dean Henderson loan in January

According to ESPN, Manchester United are considering the possibility of loaning out second-choice goalkeeper Dean Henderson in the January transfer window.

The 23-year-old Henderson is a product of the club’s youth academy. He spent the last three seasons out on loan at Shrewsbury Town and Sheffield United.

The Englishman had two brilliant campaigns with Sheffield, first helping them earn promotion to the Premier League in 2018/19 and then enjoying a breakout debut campaign in the top-flight last time out.

Henderson, without a doubt, was one of the best keepers in the Premier League last season. Following which, he was retained by Manchester United this summer.

However, the 23-year-old has been playing second-fiddle to first-choice custodian David de Gea so far this term. Indeed, Henderson has featured just three times till date, with those appearances coming in the Carabao Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

This has affected the young goalkeeper’s chances of establishing himself as a regular in the England national team. The Three Lions’ boss Gareth Southgate wants the 23-year-old to play regularly in order to challenge incumbent Jordan Pickford. (h/t ESPN)

And with the European Championships coming up in the summer, Manchester United are now considering the possibility of allowing him to leave on another temporary spell in the January transfer window. (h/t ESPN)

Should such a move materialise, Manchester United will have to incorporate veteran goalkeeper Sergio Romero back into the squad. The 33-year-old has been frozen out after Henderson’s return and has been eyeing an exit in January. (h/t ESPN)

Henderson, despite not playing regularly, is understood to be content with his role in the team for now. So, a loan move might not see the light of the day.
