Harry Maguire opens up on his arrest in Greece

Speaking to the BBC (h/t MEN), Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire has ruled out apologizing for the incident in Greece.

Maguire was given a suspended prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days after being found guilty of assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery. Describing it as a horrible experience, he revealed it was the first time he has been to prison.

“It was horrible it’s not something I ever want to do again I don’t wish it on anybody.”

The skipper regrets putting the club and its fans through this mess. High standards are expected of a United skipper on and off the pitch. It appears that Maguire is well aware of it.

“I play for one of the biggest clubs in the world so I regret putting the fans and the club through this.”

A victim of the circumstances

Maguire believes he and his family were a victim of the circumstances and were not out looking for trouble.

He corroborated the story that his sister appeared to be drugged by two men she had met at the bar. Thinking back of the incident was too much for Maguire who then broke down on camera.

“My fiancé Fern saw my little sisters’ eyes go into the back of her head. She ran over she was fainting in and out of consciousness.”

Maguire believed he and his group were being taken to a nearby hospital. They were instead taken to a local police station.

Given their larger than life personalities, we sometimes forget that footballers are human beings too. Given Maguire’s statements, his reaction is understandable.

United for their part have decided to keep Maguire on as captain. The player is thankful for United’s support and has vowed to overcome the ordeal.
