Manchester United eyeing up shock move for Romelu Lukaku

According to Calciomercato, Manchester United are the latest entrants in the race for Chelsea outcast Romelu Lukaku.

The Red Devils are keeping the Belgium international in consideration should the move for Joshua Zirkzee fall through. Lukaku, of course, played for United previously between 2017 and 2019, scoring 42 goals and providing 12 assists in 96 appearances across all competitions.

Lukaku spent the last season on loan at Roma, having been ostracised from the Chelsea first team ever since returning to Stamford Bridge from Inter Milan in 2021 in a £97.5m move and failing to impress in his first season. He spent the 2022/23 season on loan back at Inter.

Chelsea are looking to recoup a fee in the region of €40 million in order let Lukaku go permanently, but despite interest from the likes of Napoli, AC Milan, and now United, they are unable to find a long-term suitor.

Lukaku’s current contract at Chelsea is set to run until June 2026. He was the highest-paid player at Roma last season with a €172,500-a-week contract.

Therefore, if one were to entertain nuance for a second, they would see how a short-term deal would work for both Lukaku and United.

For starters, it must not be left unsaid that Joshua Zirkzee does not fit the type of football Erik ten Hag has shown his inclination to stick with in his time at Old Trafford. Wanting his strikers to remain nominally central and bring players around him into play in the final third, Lukaku fits the bill slightly more than Zirkzee, though he too performs at his best with the ball at his feet as he gets to run at the opposition defence, preferably alongside another forward. Still, he would fit Ten Hag’s system better than Zirkzee, and he is an older player who would complement Rasmus Højlund in the squad better as well.

Of course, United should not entertain the possibility of a permanent move at all, but if a season-long loan is available, Lukaku fits the bill, at least better than Zirkzee.
