Blame me and not the kids when things go wrong, says André Onana
In the latest episode of The Overlap with Gary Neville, André Onana had a message for all those critical of Man United, from pundits to fans.
In the interview, the Cameroon international talked about many things, from his exit from Barcelona in his youth days, his relationship with Erik ten Hag, to his debut season at Man United.
Crucially, he had this to say when Neville asked him about outside criticism:
When things are going wrong, don’t go for the youngest one [first-team player]. I’m here to take the bullets.
Onana has been taking not only record shots on the pitch but also criticism off it for his performances, having conceded 58 goals in the league this season despite keeping fourth-most clean sheets (9).
The 28-year-old will expect to make the starting XI this Saturday as United gear up to face same-city rivals Man City in the FA Cup final.
A refreshing stance
Onana’s interview with Neville was a remarkable piece of interaction to tune into.
From his Barcelona exit to his defence of his young teammates, Onana demonstrated both maturity and confidence with his words.
Few players manage to find their feet at all at the Theatre of “Nightmare” these days, so it’s hard to blame Onana solely for the hit-and-miss season United have had.

When one couples his words from this interview to the fair few moments of brilliance he has shown this season, it’s hard not to think that United would only benefit if they give Onana a bit of time.
