Argentina have selected Man United stars Alejandro Garnacho and Lisandro Martínez as part of the squad scheduled to face Ecuador and Guatemala ahead of the 2024 Copa América.

The Albiceleste face Ecuador on June 9 and Guatemala on June 14 before facing Canada in their Copa América opener on June 20.

For both Garnacho and Martínez, the national call-ups are crucial as they look to put behind an underwhelming club campaign with Man United.

Garnacho has had a commendable individual campaign, however, despite United delivering their worst Premier League season since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement with an eighth-place finish.

For Martínez, the season has been one to forget for reasons well beyond his control. A metatarsal injury relapse took the 26-year-old out for well over three months early in the season, which was followed by a two-month absence with a knee injury that worsened into a calf strain a few days later.

Martínez did start United’s final game of the league season against Brighton but was taken off around the hour mark.

Both Martínez and Garnacho are expected to be part of United’s Wembley trip to face Man City in the FA Cup final this Saturday before they leave for international duty.

Both are likely to make the Copa squad

Barring any late massive injury scares, both Martínez and Garnacho can be expected to make Argentina’s Copa América squad for the summer.

The prospect of players playing off-season professional football is usually worrying these days, and while the same can be applied to Garnacho, it may not be the worst thing for Martínez, who needs a fair few playing minutes under his belt to regain match fitness ahead of next season.

United are reportedly keen on making wholesale changes going into the 2024/25 season, but both Martínez and Garnacho can be expected to be part of their long-term plans given what they currently bring to the side.
