Martin Dubravka was put in a strange situation after receiving a winning medal from Manchester United
Martin Dubravka was part of the Manchester United squad for a 5-month stint last year. the 34-year-old has been with Newcastle United for over five years now. He loves the club and in return is loved by the fans of the club.
But last year proved to be a challenging and awkward time for the Slovakian. After a long time at the club, Dubravka was all of a sudden not part of the Magpies anymore.
He was shipped off to Manchester United on a loan deal. After the deal failed to bear fruit, Dubravka was prematurely called back in January. But the trouble doesn’t end there.
While at Old Trafford, Dubravka participated in 2 Carabao Cup games for Ten Hag’s squad. This made the Slovakian eligible for a winning medal if Manchester United ended up winning the whole thing.
Ironically, The Red Devils won the Carabao Cup after defeating Newcastle United in the finals. This must have come as a blow for Dubravka, who ultimately helped Manchester United reach the finals.
He was rooting for Newcastle but the Magpies couldn’t get it done. To make matters worse he was then awarded with a winning medal by Manchester United.
“A strange situation that I didn’t want to be in,”
These are the words that were used by the Newcastle man to express his feelings on the subject. (h/t The Athletic [paid subscription])

It was probably the first time that someone was sad about getting a winning medal. But as a football fan, Dubravka’s dilemma will be relatable to many. Even if it’s not fans will find a way to empathise with the player.
Due to his undying loyalty to Newcastle United, Dubravka hasn’t even put his medal on display. Surely, that feeling of strangeness will one day fade away to be replaced with something more positive and fulfilling.
