Manchester United defender Jonny Evans talked about his delight at hearing the chat that the United fanbase made for him. Fans adapted the chant from one previously used for Manchester United legend Gary Neville.

‘Jonny Evans is a Red, he hates Scousers’ is the song that the Red Devils fanbase is singing for the 35-year-old. The former Northern Ireland international returned to United for his second spell at the club during the summer transfer window.

The Irish defender played 198 games in his first spell with United while contributing six goals and eight assists. Evans has made four appearances for this season in all competitions and provided an assist. The assist that the Irishman provided was pivotal for the Red Devil’s 1-0 win against Burnley in September.

Evans spoke in an episode of Team Viewer Diaries (h/t Manchester United’s official site) about the fan’s tribute to him. He said:

“Fans started singing my name and gave me a little song, which was nice. I’m delighted about that. Whenever you’re at Old Trafford, you know, one of the best stadiums in the world, and all the fans are singing that, I have to say, the fans have been amazing with me since I came back. I really appreciate that and it’s made me feel even more at home than I already do.”

Fans have sung songs with controversial lyrics at Old Trafford, and this one is not the first. Park Ji-sung, a fan favourite and former United player, persuaded fans to cease singing the song made for him.

The song had racial stereotypes against South Korean people and created a lot of controversy in Park’s home country. The former South Korean international accepted the song as a player but urged them to stop after retiring.

The Red Devils and Scouser club, Liverpool have a historic rivalry but a rivalry that should stay within the pitch. Liverpool have beaten United in four out of the last five games in which they have clashed. The last game ended in a 7-0 historic victory for the Merseyside giants at Anfield.

It is understandable that fans are excited for Evans and his second spell at the club which has started successfully. However, the Red Devils fanbase needs to be careful and not repeat the embarrassment they suffered over Park’s song. Old Trafford favourite and United legend Wayne Rooney is a Scouser too after all.
