Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino asserts that he had no involvement in the collapsed deal for Manchester United target Marc Cucurella
In a statement to reporters (h/t Metro), Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino clarified that he had no role in the collapsed move of Marc Cucurella to Manchester United.
United manager Erik ten Hag wanted an experienced left-back and Marc Cucurella was one of the targets for the Dutchman. The Red Devils were short on left-back department after a long-term injury to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
United signed Sergio Reguilón from Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan deal after the Cucurella loan deal collapsed.
Pochettino informed reporters (h/t Metro) that he played no part in the negotiations for Cucurella with the Red Devils. He said:
“I wasn’t involved but he’s our player and I’ve been clear: he has chances, he can play. Marc is going to work hard. It’s really clear. he’s in our plan and if he deserves to play, he will play”
The 25-year-old joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion after an impressive season with the Seagulls. Cucurella has failed to live up to his price tag and potential so far at the London club. However, the Blues have struggled with imbalance and form which may have played a big role in Cucurella’s struggle.
Reguilón made a strong start to his United career with impressive performances but the Spaniard has unfortunately sustained an injury.
The 26-year-old made three appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions before his injury. The Red Devils deployed midfielder Sofyan Amrabat as a make-shift left-back in the Carabao Cup win against Crystal Palace. Nevertheless, Ten Hag will be hoping to have a natural left-back available sooner rather than later.
We don’t know if the United boss will decide to enter the January transfer market for another experienced natural left-back. However, the Dutchman will have to reevaluate the situation if Shaw and Malacia’s injuries persist.
