Fabrizio Romano claims Tottenham star Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was an option for Manchester United
Popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano speaking on his YouTube channel has claimed that Manchester United explored the opportunity of signing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg before eventually settling for Sofyan Amrabat.
In the summer of 2020, Hojbjerg moved from Southampton to Spurs for £15 million. The former Bayern Munich player has made 151 appearances for Spurs and has scored 10 goals in that time along with 16 assists.
The Dane was a key contributor for Spurs last season during what ultimately turned out to be a very disappointing and frustrating campaign. Hojbjerg was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise depressing season, as Tottenham dropped down the table to finish eighth and outside of the European spots.
Here is what Romano had to say on the Hojbjerg situation:
“Important to mention something on Pierre Hojbjerg. Tottenham midfielder, he was on the list of Atletico Madrid during the summer, they tried on deadline day but it was almost impossible to agree a deal with Tottenham for Hojbjerg on deadline day.
“And also important to mention that he was on the list of Manchester United, it was a three-man list in midfield with [Sofyan] Amrabat the priority, Youssoufa Fofana and Pierre Hojbjerg also included in the list.”
Although a possible summer transfer to Atletico Madrid was widely reported, the La Liga giants were ultimately unable to reach an agreement because Spurs were holding out for a substantial cost for the player. Eventually, he has been a bit-part figure since the start of this season.
If the perfect opportunity arises, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg might decide to depart during the winter window, which wouldn’t be shocking. He should be regularly playing first-team football at his age and will be a big addition to whichever club signs him.
Would Hojbjerg have added value to Manchester United? Yes, but only if we had not signed Amrabat. Now that we have him, we do not need to worry about the Dane for the time being.
