Manchester United are planning on opening contract talks with Erik ten Hag

According to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are planning to start talks with boss Erik ten Hag on a new deal to extend his stay at the club. Ten Hag is under contract with United till June 2025, with an option to extend for one more year.

The Dutchman, who was appointed manager in April of last year, has made a decent start to life at Old Trafford. He led the Red Devils to the Carabao Cup in his first season in charge and got them playing the best football they have played in recent times.

Ten Hag led United to a third-place finish in the Premier League and also managed to go deep in the Europa League beating the likes of Barcelona on the way.

The new season has gotten off to a rough start with four defeats so far coupled with some off-field problems, but United have reacted with two wins in a short period. On Tuesday night, they had an outing to remember with a 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

It’s just his second season with United and he has made some huge calls. Last year, Cristiano Ronaldo left the team after a further public altercation with Ten Hag, and most recently, Harry Maguire lost his captaincy.

He has also sidelined Jadon Sancho for publicly disrespecting him after the Dutch manager left him out of the squad for the game against Arsenal due to his poor training levels. Some of the Man United players have urged the young talent to apologize to him.

However, success is always determined by results. Erik ten Hag got the Cup in his first season but he knows that he will have to build on it. Contract extensions can only get you so far. Ultimately, when the results don’t come, the first head to fall will be the manager’s.

If Ten Hag gets an extension, then maybe he deserves it. However, he still has a lot to prove as the United manager and will need to do so very soon. He has the team he wants. It’s up to him to show the results.
