Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag urges players to show the resilience and determination from last year
In his post-match press conference (h/t Manchester United’s official website), Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag emphasized the need for defensive improvement. He stressed the importance of finding the same determination and resilience as last year to prevent conceding goals.
United’s first home defeat occurred as they succumbed to a 1-3 loss against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford. The Red Devils fielded Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelöf, Lisandro Martinez, and debutant Sergio Reguilón in their defense, with Casemiro positioned ahead.
Brighton carved open United’s defense in just the 20th minute of the game, with the rest of their goals coming in the second half.

In his post-match press conference (h/t Manchester United’s official website), ten Hag addressed the defensive frailties, saying:
“We have to improve, there are things for the team and the individuals, who have to step up. Sometimes, in those difficult periods, where we are now, you have to face that and you have to deal with that. In this moment, we don’t deal well with it but we showed that least year, the resilience and determination, also in defence, as you say.”
United has conceded a total of 10 goals in only five Premier League games. The Red Devils’ new goalkeeper, André Onana, has made 20 saves this season but has managed to secure only one clean sheet.

Last season, the Red Devils ranked 4th among Premier League clubs in terms of the fewest goals conceded, allowing only 43 goals in total.
For the current Premier League season, they are ranked 18th, with only Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers conceding more goals than United.

Ten Hag needs to bolster his defense once again to salvage the current campaign. This is especially crucial as they prepare to travel to Munich for their opening Champions League game against Bayern Munich.
