Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes praises new goalkeeper André Onana
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes heaped praise on the new No.1 goalkeeper André Onana. Onana joined United from Inter Milan for £47.2m.
Cameroon international played an integral role in Milan to reach the 2023 Champions League Final last season.
Fernandes spoke to the club website (h/t Manchester Evening News) while talking about his new team-mate. He said:
Onana spent only a season at Inter Milan where he made 41 appearances and kept 19 clean sheets. The 27-year-old goalie joined Milan from Ajax in July 2022 after making 214 appearances and keeping 85 clean sheets for the Dutch club
The new Red Devils captain is fully aware of the high expectation and requirement that is desired at Old Trafford. Onana’s ability on the feet is a bonus as much as his ability to keep the goal secure.
United fans would love to see Onana cement his position and leave a good legacy behind just like his predecessors. David De Gea left the club after a 12-year stint where he stood as a wall even during the time of struggle.
De Gea succeeded Edwin Van Der Sar in 2011 and the Dutchman was certainly one of the greatest goalkeepers we have ever had. There have been legends between the sticks at Manchester United and they tend to stick for more than just a couple of seasons.
Onana surely has big shoes to fill at the club. He has all the qualities and personality as suggested by Fernandes, to succeed at Old Trafford and hopefully, the 27-year-old’s mixed start to life in Manchester gets better.
