Erik ten Hag dealt with a huge injury setback as Kobbie Mainoo has been sidelined due to an ankle injury

Manchester United wonderkid Kobbie Mainoo is set to be sidelined for the first part of the upcoming season due to an ankle injury he sustained during the team’s friendly match against Real Madrid.

The Red Devils faced a 2-0 defeat against the Spanish giants in their last pre-season match in Houston. But adding to the frustration of the loss was the unfortunate sight of young talent Mainoo leaving the game early due to injury.

During the match, the English midfielder was involved in a tangle with Casemiro’s challenge on Rodrygo, causing the Madrid player to fall into the young United player.

Unfortunately, this resulted in Mainoo suffering an injury and being forced off the field just three minutes into the game. As a result, he missed the opportunity to showcase his skills against notable players like Luka Modric and Jude Bellingham.

The club has provided an update on the 18-year-old’s injury, stating that he will be sidelined for the initial weeks of the upcoming season due to the extent of his ankle injury. The club’s official website revealed:

‘Manchester United can confirm that Kobbie Mainoo suffered an ankle injury during the match against Real Madrid on Tour 2023. The midfielder is expected to be ruled out for the first part of the 2023-24 season.’

The injury comes as a significant setback for Mainoo, who had high hopes for a breakthrough season at Man United following an impressive pre-season.

Ten Hag showed his confidence in the young player by selecting him in the stronger team lineups during the initial pre-season matches.

Mainoo’s standout performance against Arsenal, where he outshone even established superstars in the midfield, was particularly noteworthy and raised expectations for his potential impact at the club. However, the injury has dampened those hopes for now.

United have one remaining friendly match against Borussia Dortmund in North America before heading back. The Premier League season kicks off with a home game against Wolves on August 14th.

With the young defensive midfielder facing a spell on the sidelines, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has stated that United will need to enter the transfer market to find a replacement for the young player.

Sofyan Amrabat has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, and with Mainoo’s absence, signing the African midfielder might now be more of a necessity than a luxury for United to bolster their midfield options.

The 26-year-old’s experience with his club and country and his superior technical skills on the ball will be a huge bonus for the manager in his pursuit of winning titles next season.
