Rio Ferdinand sends message to new Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes
Rio Ferdinand has sent a message to Bruno Fernandes after Manchester United’s decision to announce him as the club’s new captain.
When Erik ten Hag came in at Old Trafford last summer, he retained Harry Maguire as the club’s skipper. But the English centre-back lost his place in the starting XI to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.
Since then, it has been a matter of time before the Red Devils stripped him of captaincy. Last season, Fernandes seemed to don the armband more often than our actual captain himself.
The club have confirmed the Portugal international is their new skipper. Ferdinand, who captained the Red Devils in the past and is a bona fide Premier League legend, knows the responsibility that comes with the role.

He tweeted:
“What an honour it is to play for @ManUtd but to be given the extra responsibility to lead the team out is something special. Bruno has delivered numbers & performances throughout his time in a red shirt that make his announcement as captain an inevitable one.
“He takes risks, he craves the responsibility, wants to be the difference – all great traits. I really think he will thrive. The only advice for this new role is to just be YOU & be authentic…as that’s what got you to this point! Good Luck @B_Fernandes8
Varane and Casemiro could have been considered as the options for captaincy but Fernandes (28), at this point, is very well-versed about the club and what it takes to play for them.
Captaining the team will be nothing new to Fernandes. He did that on a number of occasions in the 2022-23 campaign.
Ten Hag hasn’t been afraid to make big decisions at Old Trafford. The former Sporting CP midfielder has the desire and attitude that a captain should possess.

That desire to win no matter what it costs is always something that benefits the team. He is the first to stand up for his teammates and has made a reputation for himself as a player who is willing to do whatever it takes to make the club proud. The club made the right choice.
