Andre Onana reveals the offer to play for Manchester United was “irresistible”
Andre Onana reveals that an offer to play for Manchester United was “irresistible” as he gets closer to becoming a Red Devils player.
Sky Sports revealed a day ago that United agreed on a deal with Inter Milan for a fee of up to £47.2m for the Cameroon international.
Onana has played under United boss Erik ten Hag before when the duo were at Ajax. So, the former would not have much difficulty in understanding the playing system of the latter.
Here’s what the Cameroonian said for the first time since the move to Old Trafford was confirmed (h/t La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Evening Standard):
“The important thing is to be honest and always tell people the truth. I am a person who always wants new challenges. Playing in the Premier League and for a club like United is irresistible. All parties wanted this to happen.
“But what matters is that, even if I had stayed, I would have been equally happy because I never had any problems at Inter. Indeed, a magic was born in Milan that is almost difficult to explain.”
Having seen David de Gea leave for free following the expiry of his contract this summer, one would presume that Onana will come and take over the number one spot in the team.
The 27-year-old is comfortable with the ball at his feet and is an active shot-stopper. He has a good sense of dominating his box from crosses and corner kicks.
The former Ajax stopper has the experience and is at the right age to join United and become their number one for a long time to come.
Generally, the peak years of goalkeepers are between 27 and 34. Onana is at the sweet spot right now. The hope is that he delivers performances of that level in a United shirt.
With this signing, the Red Devils are addressing a big hole in the team. Having a competent and confident goalkeeper goes a long way in instilling belief in the back-line, which in turn is a positive thing for everyone in the playing XI.
