Andre Onana says he has overcome ‘great obstacles’ before joining Manchester United

Andre Onana has finally been announced as a Manchester United player. A £47.72million was enough for the Red Devils to sign him from Inter Milan.

The 27-year-old will apparently fly out to the USA to join the club’s pre-season training. He could make his informal debut against Arsenal this weekend.

He is expected to be David de Gea’s replacement at Manchester United — a player who played 545 games for us and was our No. 1 for 12 years. It won’t be an easy task.

But Onana should be prepared for it. One brilliant season at Inter Milan (and perhaps those campaigns under Erik ten Hag at Ajax) was enough to convince the Red Devils to sign him.

Manchester United’s new No. 24

He has since given his first words as a Manchester United player. He told the club’s official media team, via Manchester Evening News:

“To join Manchester United is an incredible honour and I have worked hard all my life to get to this moment, overcoming many obstacles along the way.

“Walking out at Old Trafford to defend our goal and contribute to the team will be another amazing experience. This is the start of a new journey for me, with new teammates, and new ambitions to fight for.”

Onana spent four and a half years on Barcelona’s books but never got the chance to represent their senior team. He left for Ajax in January 2015 and made a name for himself as one of the finest goalies on the continent.

But it wasn’t until very recently that fans started to take notice of his incredible shot-stopping ability and skills on the ball. He was also removed from Cameroon’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup after an argument with coach Rigobert Song.

It has been a rocky road where Onana has had to be patient. But at the age of 27, it seems like all of that has culminated into a dream move to Manchester United. Welcome to our new No. 24!
