Chelsea eye Manchester United defender Harry Maguire after Wesley Fofana injury
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire is attracting interest from Chelsea after they lost Wesley Fofana to a long-term injury, according to 90min (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Blues will be without the France international for a lengthy spell after picking up a serious knee injury. As things stand, the 22-year-old has already undergone surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). To that end, he is expected to miss most of the 2023/24 term.
As a result, the Stamford Bridge side may need to bolster their backline in the ongoing transfer window. Maguire is one of the players on the West London club’s radar.
At the moment, Chelsea have already enquired about the England international’s situation at the Old Trafford side. The former Leicester City star was recently stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag.
The 30-year-old has found himself out of United’s starting lineup on most occasions since the Dutch manager’s appointment. The gaffer joined the Red Devils from Ajax Amsterdam last summer and has not trusted the defender.
Maguire was a bit part player at the Old Trafford side in the 2022/23 term. The English national started in just eight Premier League matches for the Manchester-based club last season.
Currently, Chelsea have other brilliant options at centre-back apart from Fofana. Thiago Silva has been a rock for the Blues in defence over the last few years. Mauricio Pochettino also has the likes of Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah and promising talent Levi Colwill at his disposal.
On the other hand, United have also found a solid duo in Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. Ten Hag also trusted Victor Lindelof as a backup in the previous campaign and the Swedish national did well.
