Erik ten Hag will personally decide the next captain at Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that he will personally decide who the Old Trafford side’s next captain will be ahead of next season.

As things stand, Harry Maguire is still the official captain of the Red Devils. However, the former Leicester City star has fallen down the pecking order since the Dutch manager’s arrival and did not feature regularly in the previous campaign.

United played their first pre-season friendly against Leeds United in Oslo on 12 July and won 2-0. After the game, The was asked whether the team would have a say in who will wear the armband at the Manchester-based club. Speaking via the Manchester Evening News, the gaffer dismissed the idea.

“No, I don’t let the dressing room vote. It is up to me.”

With Maguire a bit-part player in the 2022/23 term, Bruno Fernandes usually led the team out onto the pitch and was the de-facto captain of the Old Trafford side.

On most occasions, the Portugal international was the one who donned the armband. Therefore, it would not be a surprise to see the 28-year-old officially reprise that role.

However, we also have other candidates in the squad who are more than capable of leading the squad. Casemiro is one such name that comes to mind when talking about representing United.

The Brazil international signed for the Red Devils last summer from Real Madrid, where he won multiple La Liga and Champions League trophies. At the moment, the 31-year-old is also captain of his national side.

Raphael Varane is also a decent shout when it comes to who should wear the armband. The French national led the team out against Leeds in the recent victory. However, the 30-year-old has often been on the sidelines since making his way to Manchester in 2021.
