Jurrien Timber, currently at Ajax Amsterdam, has completed his medical with Premier League rivals Arsenal amidst interest from Manchester United, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter (h/t The Sun).

As things stand, the centre-back is close to becoming a new addition to Mikel Arteta’s team. The Gunners had reached an agreement with the Eredivisie outfit this week to acquire the Holland international’s services.

The Red Devils were also linked with the 22-year-old’s signature, with Erik ten Hag interested in his former player. Unfortunately, it looks like the North London side will beat the Old Trafford side in the race for the defender.

Timber made his way through the youth ranks at Ajax and established himself in the first team under the Dutch manager. The gaffer already got Lisandro Martinez to United from De Godenzonen. But it seems like a reunion with the Holland international is not on the cards.

The 22-year-old is a versatile defender who mostly played as a centre-back last season. However, he is also capable of being deployed on the right-hand side of the defence.

Arsenal thrived with the partnership of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes in the previous campaign. Ben White was also impressive for them at right-back. Timber’s addition will only add quality in depth to their defence.

As for United, Raphael Varane and Martinez were Ten Hag’s preferred duo in his first year in charge. The two World Cup winners have formed a solid partnership at the Old Trafford side.

On the bench, we have the likes of Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire. The Sweden international was especially reliable last season. The gaffer also played Luke Shaw to good effect as a centre-back on occasions.

Therefore, at the moment, we have enough quality in our backline. While Timber is a promising talent, the Red Devils evidently did not need him right now.
