Manchester United to hold formal talks with Inter Milan for goalkeeper Andre Onana
According to La Gazzetta Dello Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United will hold a ‘formal meeting’ with Inter Milan for the signing of Andre Onana.
The last two weeks have been a whirlwind ride for the club’s goalkeeping situation with the current number one, David De Gea now predicted to leave the club after his contract expires on June 30.
It was claimed earlier that the club would go ahead with De Gea for another season at least due to the urgency of reinforcements needed in other positions. However, that appears to have changed now.
Manager Erik Ten Hag has had a change of heart and wants a new no.1 now instead of waiting for another season. Onana is being seen as a primary target and Ten Hag is an admirer of the player, with both of them having worked together while at Ajax Amsterdam.
Also important is that Inter are in a position where they need to raise funds through player sales immediately and hence are willing to wrap up the deal quickly.
Personal terms between Onana and United should not be an issue. It does seem like a deal that could advance very quickly once the formal offer is sent to Inter with a fee they deem acceptable.
Despite winning the Premier League Golden Glove last season, it might be the last time that we saw De Gea in goal for United. It is debatable if he is keen to continue as the backup shot-stopper following a decade plus of glory as the man man.
Onana provides a very different dimension to the team as compared to De Gea. While the Spanish keeper is an amazing shot-stopper, his ability on the ball was in question throughout the season.

Onana, on the other hand, is one of the best keepers in terms of being able to play as an extra man in the build-up, something which is keen to Ten Hag’s style of play which he has not fully been able to implement at Old Trafford.
