Alejandro Garnacho, who plays for Manchester United, has been nominated for the Golden Boy award, given to the best player under 21 in Europe, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The Argentina international has made it to the 100-player shortlist. Bayern Munich talent Jamal Musiala and Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham are also up for it. As things stand, the award is held by Barcelona youngster Gavi.

Garnacho signed for the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2020 from Atletico Madrid. Subsequently, he mostly played for the Red Devils’ youth teams and caught a lot of people’s attention.

Then, in the 2022/23 campaign, the 18-year-old broke onto the scene in electric fashion. However, initially, Erik ten Hag did not seem to trust the youngster.

Thankfully, the Argentine quickly turned things around and made a place for himself in the gaffer’s plans. The forward put in some clutch displays last season, mostly coming off the bench.

In April, United tied Garnacho down to a new five-year contract. The winger earned it with his performances in the previous campaign. Last season, the 18-year-old made 34 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals and providing five assists.

The Argentine was also recently handed his first caps for La Albiceleste. He came on as a substitute in Lionel Scaloni’s team’s 2-0 friendly victories over Australia and Indonesia.

Marcus Rashford was United’s leading goalscorer in the previous campaign. The English national mostly operated on the left-hand side of the attack. Therefore, it is understandable that Garnacho has not had a lot of starts so far.

Hopefully, the Argentine will slowly develop and become better at the Old Trafford side. The 18-year-old has a high ceiling and it remains to be seen whether he will be able to fulfil his potential in the coming years.
