Manchester United witness another bid getting rejected as they inch closer to a move to Mason Mount
According to Athletic journalist David Ornstein, Manchester United’s second bid of £50 million (£45m plus £5m in add-ons) for Mason Mount has been rejected by Chelsea, but there is optimism that an agreement could be reached soon.
The Blues have proposed a counter-offer of £60m excluding bonuses, for the English midfielder.
The west Londoners are holding out for a higher up-front transfer fee, seeking around £15 million more than what United has offered. The discussions between the two clubs are ongoing as they try to find a common ground for the transfer.
United have expressed their strong interest in signing Mount this summer, but they have a specific valuation in mind that they are unlikely to exceed.
Negotiations are set to continue for the talented 24-year-old midfielder, who has just one year remaining on his present contract.
Despite the Blues efforts to convince their academy graduate to extend his contract, the club has been unsuccessful in reaching a breakthrough.
The recent appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as head coach has also not changed the situation, and Mount’s future at the club remains uncertain. Mount is eager to make the move to Old Trafford, while Chelsea are in need of player sales.
Although his parent club rejected United’s initial offer of £40 million for Mount last week, there is hope that ongoing negotiations will eventually result in a deal that is satisfactory to all parties.
This is due to Chelsea’s current financial situation and their aim to balance their books before the end of the financial year on June 30. The Blues are likely to prioritise player sales, which could work in United’s favour.
Although Erik ten Hag’s side are unlikely to meet their asking price, there is potential for a compromise to be reached in the near future.
Mount is considered a valuable addition to United, bringing a strong work rate and creativity to the central midfield position. He is seen as an upgrade over Christian Eriksen.
He possesses the qualities that align with Ten Hag’s midfield preferences, including versatility, pressing ability, and intelligence.
The Dutch manager initially became acquainted with Mount during his loan spell at Vitesse Arnhem when the English midfielder, then 18 years old, played a key role in a victory over Ajax with his free-kick in March 2018. Since then, it appears that Ten Hag has been monitoring the player’s development closely.
The fans would be happy to know about this latest development, as the talks have certainly made progress. Singing a new midfielder was of utmost priority to United, and they could have a quality player in their hands next season.
