Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is confident of pursuing Mason Mount to move to Old Trafford
According to the Sun, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is desperate to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount this summer, and the club has earmarked him as their main target.
It’s no secret that the Red Devils are seriously interested in a deal to bring the 24-year-old to the red side of Manchester in the ongoing transfer window.
As stated by the Daily Mail, Man United are in need of reinforcements, and the English midfielder could be the one they are looking for. In addition to a striker, the club is also looking to add a midfielder who can bring more competition to the squad.
Mount has been a crucial player for Chelsea in the past few seasons. He won the Champions League with the Blues in 2020–21. He has made 195 appearances for the club, contributing 33 goals and 37 assists.
However, his performances hit a low last campaign due to injury issues and inconsistent performances. It would be safe to say that the midfielder still has a lot of calibre within him, and when fit, he has been putting up some decent numbers for Chelsea.
As per transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Blues have already rejected a £40 million bid from the Red Devils, who have already expressed great interest in the player. Mount still has a year left on his contract, but his future is uncertain at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea would be prepared to let him go if any concerned club were ready to pay his £70m valuation. That doesn’t seem to be a number with which United can agree.
What’s the next plan for Man United in their pursuit of Mount?
According to the Mirror, Ten Hag’s side will be preparing a second bid in the region of close to £50m for the 24-year-old. The manager will be careful about missing out on transfer targets as other clubs have started pushing to sign more players.
The Red Devils are already well behind in the race to sign Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae. Bayern Munich is potentially his next destination, and the German giants have agreed personal terms with the South Korean sensation.
Ten Hag would not be happy to lose yet another key target in Mount, and the club would need to accelerate their attempts to sign the Chelsea star.
Meanwhile, the Blues are ready to face a major squad overhaul this summer. They have already waved goodbye to N’Golo Kante and are close to losing Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly to Saudi Arabian clubs.
Newly appointed manager Mauricio Pochettino has not commented on Mount’s contract situation as the club is currently busy dealing with the outgoings.
In light of this, United should take advantage of this situation and try to negotiate a deal for the English midfielder as soon as possible. While it may not be in the best interest of the club to pay an overinflated sum for Mount, it would be beneficial if both parties agreed to a decent fee.
The 24-year-old’s versatility could be helpful for Ten Hag, as he can fit in the role of a central midfielder or an attacking midfielder at times. He could rotate his positional play with Christian Eriksen or even Bruno Fernandes.
