Premier League rivals Newcastle United have ‘genuine interest’ in Manchester United target and Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella, according to The Telegraph via transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

The Magpies are eyeing a move for the midfielder in the ongoing transfer window. However, the Toons are yet to make a formal bid or an approach for the Italy international.

As per SportMediaset, via FCInterNews (h/t The Sun), the Red Devils are one of the teams in the English top flight that have the 26-year-old on their radar.

As things stand, nothing is advanced regarding the Tyneside outfit’s links with Barella. The St James’ Park side have not agreed personal terms with him either. Also, the Nerazzurri feel the midfielder is worth a lot more than £50 million.

The Italian has been at Inter since 2019 and has been a pivotal player for them ever since. In the 2022/23 campaign, Simone Inzaghi’s team made it to the final of the Champions League but lost to Manchester City.

Eddie Howe has done a fantastic job at Newcastle so far. Last season, the Magpies finished fourth in the PL table. The Serie A giants’ engine room consists of the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and Joelinton.

As for Man United, we signed Christian Eriksen on a free transfer last summer. The Danish national was an important part of Erik ten Hag’s plans in the previous campaign.

However, towards the end of the 2022/23 term, the 31-year-old looked a bit lethargic. Over the course of the season, the playmaker also struggled to complete the 90 minutes.

Therefore, we could evidently do with more quality in the middle of the park. But will Newcastle pip us to Barella’s signature this summer? Only time will tell.
