Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole wants the club to do more than just signing Harry Kane and Mason Mount
Andy Cole has warned Manchester United that signing only Harry Kane and Mason Mount in the summer won’t make the team great again.
United are doing their best to acquire the services of Tottenham Hotspur talisman Kane in the summer window. Erik ten Hag earmarked him as his primary target and for good reason, given the 29-year-old is scoring goals for fun for club and country.
The Red Devils are the front-runners to sign Chelsea star Mason Mount. The latest on it is that signing the England international is the club’s top priority this summer.
Here’s what Cole on the prospect of signing these two Englishmen and why United need more than that (h/t Punters.pub, via Daily Mail):
“Harry Kane, if he goes to Manchester is going to bring goals, but bringing one player into score goals is not going to win you the league.
“Ultimately, he would make Manchester United better, but I’m not going to buy into that. If Man United get Harry Kane, they’ve got a good chance to win the league. But if one player is going to make such a difference, why doesn’t every team in the top four by one player to try and win the league? Because it’s not that easy. It’s definitely not that easy.
“If you’re going to move Manchester United forward, you got to turn round and say to yourself ‘would the players that Manchester looking to buy or bring in, would they be in a team like Manchester City?
“That’s how you’re going to close the gap for me, personally. Like I just touched on previously, would Manchester City look to bring in a player like Mason Mount to make them better?”
While the former United striker in what he is saying here, United are in the market for signing more than just Kane and Mount.
They are aiming to bolster the goalkeeping department with the potential signature of Diogo Costa. It also remains to be seen whether they can add one or two players in the central midfield area apart from Mount.
At the back, they are keen on getting Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae. However, if Harry Maguire remains insistent that he wants to stay at the club, then signing the South Korean international might be tough.
On the other hand, we have seen United squandering in the transfer market when the pressure is on. This is an important window for the club after the job ten Hag has done in his first season as a manager.
