Diogo Dalot in ‘advancing’ talks with Manchester United over new contract

Manchester United are in ‘advancing’ talks with Diogo Dalot over signing a new contract to extend his stay at the club, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter.

The Portugal international’s existing deal with the Red Devils is set to expire in the summer of 2024 (transfermarkt). Fortunately, the Old Trafford side are confident of securing the right-back’s future for the foreseeable future.

As things stand, United plan to keep a hold of the 23-year-old. The Red Devils want the defender to put pen to paper on a long-term contract.

Dalot made his way to the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2018 from FC Porto. However, initially, the Portuguese mostly played a bit-part role in the team.

Then, for the 2020/21 season, the right-back was sent on loan to AC Milan. The 23-year-old found regular game time at the Rossoneri. But on his return to Manchester, the defender was once again forced to watch on from the bench.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer preferred Aaron Wan-Bissaka in his starting lineup at United. Under the Norwegian head coach, the former Crystal Palace star was ever-present on the team sheet.

However, when the 50-year-old parted ways with the Red Devils in the middle of the previous campaign, Dalot’s fortunes at the club changed.

With the arrival of Erik ten Hag, the Portuguese has become a pivotal member of the team. Before the 2022 World Cup, the 23-year-old had started in almost every game for the Dutch manager at the Old Trafford side.

In recent weeks, Wan-Bissaka has done well. However, Dalot is still seemingly the first choice. It is important that United agree on a deal with the Portuguese as soon as possible to avoid losing him on a free transfer next year.
