Dimitar Berbatov feels Manchester United need a number nine and a centre-back in the summer

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov feels the club needs to add a number nine and a centre-back to bolster their squad in the summer transfer window.

United are obviously expected to be active in the transfer market to add players that can potentially propel them to challenge for the title next season.

A few days ago, Erik ten Hag talked about having the necessary backing from the board to help him sign his top targets in the window.

Berbatov thinks the manager and his staff must sign a striker and a centre-back to get better next season. Here’s what he said (h/t BetFred, via Manchester Evening News):

“They need a striker, for sure. It’s been spoken about so much before.

“For me, it’s the priority for United in the summer transfer window because they need that player that’s going to get them over 20 goals a season. Who’s it going to be? We need to wait and see.

“I also believe they need to buy a centre-back this summer and it’s a must, in my opinion. I believe that United are pretty much covered in every other area of the pitch, but if they don’t have that consistency, then they’re going to drop points when they shouldn’t drop points and end up in a similar position next season.”

A few weeks ago, ten Hag clearly spoke about needing to sign a player who can finish off the chances they create in games. Although Marcus Rashford has scored goals and won games on his own at times, he would need adequate support in order for the team to sustain a title challenge.

At the back, one would be surprised if Harry Maguire stays at the club after being dropped from the squad and not getting enough starts despite injuries to key defenders. So, there is a need to sign a centre-back in the summer.

One position that Berbatov and it is the most important one – central midfield. United are willing to listen to offers for Fred. The Brazilian has been a fringe player under ten Hag and may leave as the manager wants to be ruthless and ship out players that are of no use to the squad.
