Lisandro Martinez in line for a hefty pay rise after an impressive first season at Manchester United

According to Sun (h/t Daily Mail), Lisandro Martinez is in line for a considerable pay rise after an excellent first season at Manchester United.

United boss Erik ten Hag is keen on rewarding the Argentine with a pay rise and an elevated status in the squad. The club’s hierarchy is in agreement with this.

The former Ajax defender currently earns around £125,000-per-week. That wage is about to be increased by £50,000 in the near future.

Martinez, who is currently out for this season due to a serious metatarsal bone injury, formed a solid partnership with Raphael Varane in central defence.

The hope is that the duo restart their good work once reunited. The former was initially labelled as a defender too short for the Premier League by a certain Jamie Carragher.

The 25-year-old has quashed those fears in no time and become one of the best defenders in the league. He would want to continue his good form after returning from the injury.

It is a good idea for the club to reward a player who has done well in his first season here. It may spur him on to do greater things in the years to come.

Till then, Martinez will watch and hope that the rest of the team completes the job and finishes inside the top four this season.

United are four points ahead of fifth-placed Liverpool having played the same number of games. The latter play Leicester City on Monday night and the former’s game in hand is next week against Chelsea.
