Manchester United to ‘target’ Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford as David de Gea replacement
Everton shot-stopper Jordan Pickford is being eyed by Manchester United as a replacement for David de Gea, according to the Daily Star (h/t Manchester Evening News).
If the Spaniard leaves the Red Devils at the end of the season, the Old Trafford side will ‘target’ the England international to bolster the goalkeeping department.
The former Atletico Madrid star is currently in the final year of his contract at the Manchester-based club. After the several errors made in between the sticks by the 32-year-old, his future as the number one is in doubt.
De Gea signed for Man United in the summer of 2011. Since then, in almost every campaign, he has been our first-choice shot-stopper. But since the 2018 World Cup, the veteran goalkeeper has become error-prone.
Dean Henderson seemed to have overtaken the Spaniard in the pecking order in the 2020/21 season. However, the 32-year-old has managed to get back to his best in recent months.
But with the arrival of Erik ten Hag, De Gea’s frailties with the ball at his feet have become apparent. While the former Atletico star has pulled off some impressive saves in the current campaign, he also has made some blunders, like the one we saw in the 1-0 loss to West Ham United.
Pickford has thrived at Everton over the years. Last season, the England international was key for them as they survived the drop. However, the Toffees are once again in a relegation battle.
The 29-year-old is a quality player. But the Goodison Park side’s shot-stopper is known for making a few blunders of his own as well.

Nevertheless, Pickford is an established goalkeeper in the Premier League. If De Gea were to part ways with Man United, we would evidently need a new number one. But it remains to be seen whether the English national will make his way to the Old Trafford side in the coming months.
