Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot has hailed his compatriot Diogo Costa, who plays for FC Porto and has been linked with a move to the Old Trafford side.

The two Portugal internationals have played together for their national side. In the 2022 World Cup, the right-back and the shot-stopper featured for Os Navegadores as they made it to the quarter-finals of the prestigious competition.

Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Dalot believes Costa has the ability to make it to the very top in football. The 23-year-old also mentioned the Red Devils as a destination for the goalkeeper.

“I know perfectly well that he has the capacity to one day be one of the best in the world. I don’t know if he’ll be at Manchester United or another big club in Europe, but he shows at Porto that he is a big player and has helped the club a lot.”

The Portuguese shot-stopper made his way through the youth ranks at the Dragoes. In the previous campaign, the 23-year-old broke into the Primeira Liga outfit’s first-team setup.

Since then, Costa has been ever-present in Porto’s lineup. Sergio Conceicao has relied heavily on the Portugal international in between the sticks for some time now.

The 23-year-old’s performances have attracted a lot of people’s attention. In the Primeira Liga outfit’s Champions League run this season, the shot-stopper put in some impressive displays, saving multiple penalties and providing an assist during the group-stage fixtures.

David de Gea has been United’s number one for over a decade now. The Spaniard has been Erik ten Hag’s preferred option at the Old Trafford side. Although, the 32-year-old has made several errors in the current campaign.

However, the gaffer does not have the luxury of options at his disposal in the goalkeeping department. Tom Heaton and Jack Butland are the two goalkeepers backing up the former Atletico Madrid star.

De Gea is not getting any younger and the Spaniard does not seem to complement Ten Hag’s style of play. Therefore, we evidently need to look for his successor. But will the Red Devils be able to use Dalot’s relationship with Costa to entice him to the Theatre of Dreams? Only time will tell.
