Marcos Rojo glad Manchester United replaced Harry Maguire with Lisandro Martinez
Former Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo is glad that Manchester United have replaced Harry Maguire with Lisandro Martinez in their starting lineup.
The Argentina international joined the Red Devils from Ajax last summer. Since then, our skipper has found game time hard to come by at the Old Trafford side and has mostly been a bit-part player under Erik ten Hag.
Speaking to TyC Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), Rojo, who spent almost seven years on United’s books, expressed his anguish at Maguire replacing him in the team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“In 2019 I was playing in the Europa League, but I was really angry with the Manchester coach [Solskjaer] because he was putting Maguire [in the team] instead of me. Thank god finally they took him out from the starting line-up for Licha [Lisandro] Martinez.”
The 33-year-old is currently playing in Argentina with Boca Juniors. He had signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2014. The centre-back had established himself in the starting lineup prior to the Old Trafford side getting the England international from Leicester City.
Maguire became a pivotal player for United immediately after his arrival. A few months into the defender’s time in Manchester, he was also handed the captain’s armband.
While the 30-year-old has been crucial in the past, he has lost that influence in the team with the arrival of Ten Hag in the dugout. The Dutch manager has preferred the partnership of Martinez and Raphael Varane in the backline.

The Argentine has formed a solid duo with the French national. We have 14 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, the most of any team in the English top flight.
The former Ajax defender has brought tenacity and aggression, as well as calmness on the ball in our backline. With his do-or-die attitude on the pitch, the 25-year-old has quickly become a fan favourite.

While Martinez has warranted being in the team over Maguire, it is weird to see Rojo feel hard done by. The 33-year-old left a lot to be desired during his time at the Manchester-based club.
