Erik ten Hag unsure Manchester United defender Harry Maguire will return from injury vs Aston Villa
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is unsure of whether Harry Maguire will return from his injury to face Aston Villa in our next fixture.
The gaffer had revealed prior to the game against Tottenham Hotspur that the England international had picked up a knock in training. Subsequently, the Red Devils gave up a two-goal lead and drew 2-2 versus the North London side.
Speaking to media after the match via the club’s official website, Ten Hag was asked whether the 30-year-old would be back in action on the weekend. The gaffer does not know how long the centre-back will be out at this point.
“In this moment, I can’t say anything about that. We have to wait, to talk with the medical and to talk with Harry. We will see.”
On Thursday (27 April), United dominated Tottenham in the first half. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford got on the scoresheet for the Red Devils before the break.
Unfortunately, the second half saw Spurs make a comeback. Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min found the back of the net for the North London side as our defence struggled to cope with their attack.
Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw started as United’s centre-backs for the second consecutive game. The two looked all over the place during the second 45 minutes versus Tottenham.
Ten Hag has had to use a makeshift backline with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane unavailable. The Argentine and French nationals picked up injuries in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals against Sevilla.
Maguire has not had the best of seasons for the Red Devils. The defender has lost his place in the starting lineup under Ten Hag. In recent weeks, the former Leicester City star’s performances have not been encouraging either.

However, with the crisis in our defence, the 30-year-old is a key player for us. We do not have a lot of centre-backs available as things stand. Hopefully, the English national will be back fit against Villa on Sunday.
