Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has blasted the “naivety” of the Red Devils after their 7-0 loss to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday (5 March).

The Anfield side welcomed the Manchester-based club home for the North-West derby. Jurgen Klopp’s team trounced the Old Trafford side after putting on a relentless display in the second half.

Speaking to Premier League Productions (h/t Manchester Evening News), Scholes, who spent his entire playing career at United, feels the current team have been clueless on certain occasions.

“There’s a naivety about this from United, team and players; they’ve let in six at Man City and now seven at Liverpool. These are places where you need to go and stop teams playing, and they haven’t done that. It’s difficult not to be embarrassed by that result.”

In the opening 45 minutes, the Red Devils put on a decent performance and created a couple of chances. However, it was Liverpool who took the lead just before the break through Cody Gakpo.

Then, in the second half, the Merseysiders had an impressive start and found the back of the net twice in the first five minutes. Unfortunately, it seemed like that took the wind out of the Old Trafford side’s stars.

By the end of it, along with Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez, Mohamed Salah also got a brace by the 83rd minute. The Egypt international gave our entire backline a hard time in the second half.

United players seemed lethargic and out of sorts for the majority of the time after the break. It looked like the Red Devils just wanted the game to end. However, the Anfield side were not done until the end, with Roberto Firmino scoring the seventh in the 88th minute.

Earlier in the season, United have suffered some heavy defeats against the likes of Brentford and Manchester City. Against Pep Guardiola’s team, at least the Red Devils tried until the end to get goals.

However, the Liverpool tie was one of the worst days to be a fan of the Old Trafford side. While Ten Hag has taken massive strides with us, there is still evidently a lot that needs to be done.
