Manchester United ‘continue’ talks with David de Gea over new contract
Contract talks between Manchester United and David de Gea ‘continue’ as the Red Devils try to reach an agreement with the Spain international, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter (h/t Manchester Evening News).
Both parties are hopeful of coming to terms on a new deal. The shot-stopper is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
The Red Devils opted against the option of an automatic one-year extension. Instead, the Old Trafford side are hopeful that the 32-year-old will remain at the club on a lower salary.
De Gea made his way to Man United in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid. The Spaniard took a few months to find his feet in England. However, the goalkeeper has now been one of our best players over the last few years.
Although, the 32-year-old did have a shaky spell in the middle. After the 2018 World Cup, he seemed to have lost confidence and made some high-profile errors.
At one point, it looked like Dean Henderson would pip De Gea in the pecking order. The England international was given the opportunity after his successful spell at Sheffield United.
However, the Spaniard established himself as the number one once again in the previous campaign. Ever since then, the 32-year-old has been in impressive form.
At the start of this season, De Gea struggled a bit. Erik ten Hag has seemingly tried to put more emphasis on playing out from the back. Unfortunately, in that regard, the Spaniard leaves a lot to be desired.

But in recent months, the Spaniard has looked much more comfortable with the ball at his feet. He has also made some clutch saves in important moments. But will the shot-stopper remain in between the sticks in the upcoming campaign? Only time will tell.
