Brentford plan to sell Ivan Toney at risk due to betting ban amidst Manchester United interest
Premier League rivals Brentford were planning on cashing in on Ivan Toney in the upcoming transfer window amidst interest from Manchester United. However, the possibility of a ban has put any potential deal at risk, according to the Daily Mail (h/t Express).
The 26-year-old recently admitted to breaching FA betting rules after pleading guilty to many of the 262 charges. As a result, the striker could be punished and will face a lengthy period on the sidelines.
Toney’s current contract with the Bees expires in the summer of 2025. Earlier in the season, they were unable to come to terms with the forward and extend his deal. Therefore, the West London club were resigned to selling the English national next summer.
However, a potential ban could jeopardise a move in the coming months. As a result, the Gtech Community Stadium size could see their £50 million valuation tumble due to the striker’s contract situation.
The 26-year-old made his way to Brentford in the summer of 2020 from Peterborough United. Subsequently, he helped the Bees gain promotion to the English top flight.
Toney has continued his goalscoring exploits in the PL. In the current campaign, the English national has found the back of the net 15 times in 23 appearances in all competitions.
The 26-year-old also got a call-up to the Three Lions’ squad in the final international break before the 2022 World Cup. Although, the forward did not make it to the list for the tournament in Qatar.
Erik ten Hag is making do with Anthony Martial and Wout Weghorst as the only natural strikers at the moment in the Man United squad. However, we evidently need more quality up front if we aspire to win major trophies.
