Burnley loanee Wout Weghorst hoping to “stay longer” at Manchester United

Wout Weghorst, who is on loan at Manchester United from Burnley until the end of the season, is hoping to “stay longer” with the Red Devils.

The Old Trafford side signed the Holland international on a temporary move from the Clarets in the ongoing transfer window. Prior to making his way to Manchester, the 30-year-old was at Besiktas for half of the 2022/23 campaign.

In Turkey, Weghorst had a decent spell. In 18 appearances in all competitions for the Super Lig outfit, the striker found the back of the net nine times and provided four assists.

The 30-year-old joined Burnley in the last winter window. Having built up a reputation for being a prolific goalscorer in Germany with Wolfsburg, the Holland international found life hard in Lancashire.

However, Erik ten Hag opted to put faith in Weghorst for the short term to bolster the forward line after Cristiano Ronaldo’s untimely exit. The 37-year-old’s exit had left the gaffer with just one natural striker—Anthony Martial.

As a result, United acquired the Holland international’s services on loan. However, speaking to the media via the Mirror, the 30-year-old expressed his desire to remain in Manchester beyond the end of the season.

“Of course I want to stay longer. I’ve seen the first week and how big the club is, in everything, the facilities, the club, even the quality in the team and the way we’re playing.

“There’s a lot of quality in everything and that’s something you look to work in, to be in a winning atmosphere. I think the first week went well and it’s up to me to deliver and contribute and help the team as much as I can. I’m quite confident I can play a role in it.”

Weghorst has done well so far. He has brought industry to the forward line. We have seen a lot of the Holland international already due to Anthony Martial’s fitness issues.

The 30-year-old made his debut for the Red Devils in the 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace. Ten Hag also deployed the forward in the number nine position in the loss to Arsenal.

Weghorst finally got his first goal for the Old Trafford side in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup. Hopefully, the 30-year-old will be able to continue contributing to the team. However, it will be interesting to see whether the club opt to get him on a permanent basis.
