Manchester City beat Manchester United to the signing of Maximo Perrone from Velez Sarsfield
Premier League rivals Manchester City are set to beat Manchester United to the signing of Maximo Perrone from Velez Sarsfield, according to TYC Sports’ Cesar Luis Merlo on Twitter (h/t Mirror).
The Sky Blues have agreed to pay £8.2 million to acquire the 20-year-old’s signature. His current contract with the Liga Profesional outfit was set to expire at the end of 2023.
Pep Guardiola’s team have been eyeing the midfielder’s signature for some time now. It looks like the Cityzens are finally close to getting the exciting prospect.
Perrone has been dubbed the ‘next Frenkie de Jong’. The Red Devils were also targeting the youngster. In the summer of 2022, the Old Trafford side were chasing the Barcelona star to bolster the middle of the park.
The 20-year-old has made his way through the youth ranks at Velez. In the previous campaign, the Argentina U20 international broke into the Jose Amalfitani Stadium side’s first team.
Perrone has mostly played in the deep midfield role for the Buenos Aires-based club. Last season, the youngster helped the Liga Profesional outfit reach the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores.
United signed Casemiro and Christian Eriksen to bolster their engine room in the previous transfer window. The duo have cemented their place in Erik ten hag’s plans.
Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek are also at the Dutch manager’s disposal. The Red Devils also have some exciting youngsters like Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage in their youth sides.
