Paulo Fonseca admits top clubs will circle for LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David amidst Manchester United links
LOSC Lille manager Paulo Fonseca has admitted that top clubs will try to land Jonathan David next summer amidst links to Manchester United.
The 22-year-old’s current contract with the Ligue 1 outfit expires in the summer of 2025. But it is unlikely that the Canada international will be with the French outfit at the start of the 2023/24 season.
Speaking to La Voix des Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), the Portuguese hailed David’s qualities. However, Lille’s head coach acknowledged that it would be hard to keep a hold of the striker in the coming future.
“It will be difficult to keep Jonathan David at the club next season.
“There are not many strikers with his skills and numbers in Europe. He’s just 22. I think top European clubs will try to sign Jonathan David.”
The 22-year-old joined the Ligue 1 outfit in the summer of 2020 from Belgian outfit Gent. Since then, the youngster has impressed with his displays for the French side.
In the current campaign, the Canadian has taken his game to the next level. He has found the back of the net nine times for Les Dogues in 16 Ligue 1 appearances this term.
David also featured for the Canucks at the 2022 World Cup. However, the 22-year-old failed to find the back of the net in any of the three group stage fixtures in Qatar as Canada failed to qualify for the knockout rounds.
United’s front line recently lost Cristiano Ronald. The 37-year-old departed the club midway through the season. As a result, Anthony Martial is now the only natural number nine at Erik ten Hag’s disposal.
Marcus Rashford has also done well in the current campaign when he has been asked to lead the line. The 25-year-old is the Red Devils’ leading goalscorer this term.
