Manchester United ‘working’ on record transfer fee for FC Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa

Manchester United are ‘working’ on a record transfer deal to get a hold of the signature of FC Porto star Diogo Costa, according to Spanish outlet AS (h/t The Sun).

The Red Devils are looking to bolster the goalkeeping area and are eyeing a move for the Portugal international. However, there are other teams interested in his signature.

In their pursuit of the 23-year-old, the Old Trafford side could surpass the £72 million sum Chelsea paid for Kepa Arrizabalaga in 2018, which is currently the highest price paid for a goalkeeper.

Currently, David de Gea is the number one in between the sticks for United. However, the Spaniard’s current contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

While the Red Devils are looking to extend the 32-year-old’s deal, they would like to do so on reduced terms. Thus, it remains to be seen whether the former Atletico Madrid star remains at the club beyond this season.

Costa established himself in the Primeira Liga outfit’s first team in the previous campaign. Since then, the 23-year-old has been the first name on the team sheet for Sergio Conceicao.

In the current campaign, the Portugal international has caught a lot of people’s attention with his performances. The shot-stopper’s displays in the Champions League for his club have been special.

Costa was also an ever-present in between the sticks for Fernando Santos’ team at the 2022 World Cup. However, the 23-year-old did not have the best of tournaments in Qatar. Portugal crashed out of the quarter-finals after being beaten by Morocco.
