Frenkie de Jong would be “disappointed” to leave Barcelona amidst Manchester United interest
Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has stated that he would be “disappointed” to leave the Catalan outfit amidst interest from Manchester United.
The Red Devils were looking to sign the Holland international in the recent transfer window and had even agreed to a fee with Barcelona. However, in the end, the midfielder stayed at the Camp Nou side.
De Jong is still being eyed by the Old Trafford side ahead of January. While he has publicly denied the possibility of parting ways with the Blaugrana, privately, the midfielder has told Erik ten Hag he is open to a move.
Speaking in an Amazon Prime docu-series titled “FC Barcelona: A New Era” (h/t Manchester Evening News), set to be released on 28 December, the 25-year-old has revealed his desire to stay at Barcelona for years to come.
“I see myself playing here for a long time. I don’t care for rumours about whether I’m going to another club or staying here.
“We haven’t spoken about it and no one from the club has told me anything. I don’t think it will happen, honestly, but if it does I would be disappointed.”
De Jong signed for the Blaugrana in the summer of 2019 from Ajax, where he had a fruitful spell under the current United gaffer. However, in the current campaign, the midfielder initially found it hard in Catalunya.
Xavi has a host of talent in the middle of the park, including Sergio Busquets, Gavi, Pedri and Frank Kessie. As a result, the Holland international had found it h
ard to get into the Spanish manager’s plans at the start of the campaign. However, since the initial setback, the 25-year-old has made a place for himself at Barcelona in recent fixtures. The former Ajax star was also impressive with the Netherlands at the 2022 World Cup.
Currently, the Red Devils have a decent midfield trio in Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes. However, the Denmark international has looked fatigued in some of our previous games.

However, the Old Trafford side’s bench strength leaves a lot to be desired. Thus, it would be wise for the club to add strength in depth to the squad by signing someone like De Jong. Hopefully, this time around, the saga does not drag on.
