Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has emerged as a possible transfer target for Spanish giants Barcelona according to Spanish outlet SPORT (h/t Manchester Evening News).

Shaw sees his current contract expire next summer, although the club has the option to extend his stay by another year. Should that not happen, the 27-year-old will be free to open talks with foreign clubs from next month.

The England international joined the Red Devils back in 2014 from Southampton. Since then he has been a regular for the club, although he did fall down the pecking order this season.

Erik ten Hag bought in Tyrell Malacia in the summer and he became the preferred option on the left side. However, the England international has been able to regain his position back and is likely to continue as a starter going forward.

Shaw has featured in 15 games so far in all competitions, registering four assists in the process. He was also the first choice for the Three Lions in this year’s World Cup and featured in all their games as they crashed out of the quarter-finals, losing 2-1 to France.

It will be wise on United’s part to keep the 27-year-old. He seems to have regained his form and he along with Malacia could be the options for Ten Hag on the left side ahead of a potentially hectic second half of the season.

Should the 27-year-old leave, it will leave Malacia as the preferred option at left-back with youngster Brandon Williams yet to play for the senior team this season. Alex Telles would have been another option, but he is currently out on loan at Sevilla.

However, if Ten Hag does decide to part ways with the English defender, he will be wise to bring in a replacement. Should anything happen to Malacia, the coach will have to either rely on a youngster or play a defender out of position. It remains to be seen what the Red Devils decide to do in the coming games.
