Manchester United have decided against signing Newcastle United loanee Martin Dubravka on a permanent deal, with the club eyeing a new goalkeeper next summer, according to ESPN (h/t Metro).
The Slovakia international signed for the Red Devils on deadline day in the recent transfer window on a temporary deal. His season-long loan included the Old Trafford side paying the Magpies £2 million and covering the shot-stopper’s wages for the campaign.
United signed the 33-year-old after Dean Henderson’s departure in the summer of 2022. The England international joined Nottingham Forest on loan.
incontent-ad1">As a result, David de Gea and Tom Heaton were the only two first-team goalkeepers at Erik ten Hag’s disposal before the arrival of Dubravka. However, the Slovak has found game time hard to come by in Manchester.
The Dutch manager has opted to continue with the Spaniard as the number one in between the sticks for the Red Devils. Since last season, the 32-year-old has been in fine form for the Old Trafford side.
United signed De Gea in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid. Since then, he has been the first choice for every manager in the Old Trafford dugout.
However, the Spaniard did have a period of uncertainty in between at the Manchester-based club. His form took a dive after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. At one point, it looked like Henderson would pip the 32-year-old to a starting spot.
But De Gea has done well to revive his career at United. Unfortunately, as a result, Dubravka has made just one appearance for the Red Devils. The Slovak enjoyed regular game time at Newcastle until the signing of Nick Pope in the recent transfer window.
The 33-year-old has hardly been given a chance at United as of yet. However, with more domestic cup competitions to be played in the second half of the season, maybe the loanee could enjoy more first-team action.
