Manchester United lead race to sign PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo
Manchester United are leading the race to sign PSV Eindhoven and Netherlands star Cody Gakpo, according to Calcio Mercato (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The 23-year-old has been in fine form for the Eredivisie outfit in the current campaign. And his displays have attracted interest from several sides in the Premier League. However, the Red Devils are ahead of other competitors in the pursuit of the Holland international.
In the English top flight, Leeds United and Southampton were linked with the forward’s signature in the summer of 2022. But he ended up staying with the Red and Whites and has enjoyed a fruitful season so far.
Gakpo made his way up through the youth ranks at PSV and has now established himself as one of the side’s key players. The 23-year-old has been a regular in the Eredivisie outfit’s first team for some time now. However, he shone brightly in the previous campaign.
And the forward has taken his game to the next level this season. In 24 appearances for the Red and Whites in all competitions, the youngster has scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists.
Gakpo is currently in Qatar with the Netherlands national team. He scored the opening goal in the Oranje’s 2-0 win over Senegal in their first Group A fixture at the World Cup.
United bought Antony from Ajax in the recent transfer window to bolster their attacking options. And the Brazilian’s signing has been relatively successful as of yet. The 22-year-old scored in each of his first three PL appearances.
